Denfair Sydney 2018

What’s new in the world of Design?

DENFAIR is Australia’s leading destination for contemporary design and art for professional designers, architects and interior stylists.  This much anticipated event was held at the Hordern Pavilion and last Thursday I ventured out hoping to find just one fabulous new product and what I found was so much more.

Two products stood head and shoulders above the rest for me, the first being the most stunning linen fabrics and the second a fully waterproof wallpaper (and you know how much I love wallpaper!).

That’s not to take away from the other products, but these two will definitely feature in upcoming projects and I’m sure that others featured here won’t be far behind them.

Denfair Sydney 2018 Raffles Textiles
Raffles Textiles curate and design the best of European pure linen soft furnishing fabrics to the Interior Design industry.

Denfair Sydney 2018 Raffles Textiles

Here are a sample of some of their fabrics.
They’re soft to the touch and would visually make a stunning impact made into cushions or drapes.

Denfair Sydney 2018 London Art Wallpaper

Forget tiles and wallpaper your bathroom!
This waterproof wallpaper by London Art is installed as normal wallpaper would be, but dries with a glass finish. You can select from one of the many styles that they offer, or supply an image & they will custom make on demand.

French Provincial

French Provincial Inspiration

The French Provincial look dates back to the late 1700’s in French provinces, mainly Bordeaux, Brittany, Normandy and Provence.  They began to emulate the lavish furnishings adorning chateaux and estates but on a smaller scale to use in their homes. The style is both luxurious and comfortable using rustic timbers, stone and distressed materials.
A soft colour palette, think muted tones and linen fabrics.

French Country Collections are our go to supplier when looking for a simple and luxurious style and the following items are a small example of their stunning range.

A Creative Block

Do you have a creative block?

January was the perfect time for taking it slowly & settling into the New Year.

February’s a good time for planning & then with the cooler weather in March it’s time to take action!

When decorating, do you get stuck for ideas?

Following on from our last blog about Renovations, this week we turn to Decorating.

A question I’m often asked is  – where do I start?

You’ve seen all of the home decorating shows on tv, so let’s see if we can banish that
creative block and help you take that idea and turn it into a plan of action.

Organised desk

A New Year is all about New Beginnings
Now let’s get started!

What do you want to achieve?

The Style Project open plan family room and kitchen[IMAGE – THE STYLE PROJECT]

New carpeting, floorboards or a rug?

New curtains or do you go shutters?

A new sofa or reupholster the existing one?

Organised shelving with baskets

Should I replace that old dark timber coffee table with a glass topped table to open up the space?

We never have enough side tables so 2 would be good

I can never read in our living room so 2 table lamps could help this

Can you see where this is going?

Keep adding to your list and as you do you will begin to see the new room in your mind.

Here’s where you’ll start to have fun.

Start by putting together your own mood board.
Pinterest and magazines are always an excellent place to begin.
I have a list of Interior Design blogs that you might find inspirational
(you will find these in the banner on the right hand side of this blog post)

I love Pinterest as a fun place to look for amazing images.
Here’s a link to The Style Project’s Pinterest page – click here.

The Style Project Pinterest

Amazing ideas don’t just come to you; it’s not that simple.
You need a source of inspiration to assist in the design processes.

Mood Board

Mood Board

Mood board

Often we ignore an idea that has great potential by not dedicating enough time to it.
As an interior designer, I’m a visual person.
Feeling & touching an item can assist me to see the potential in something and understand how it functions.
Allow yourself to experiment and refine different looks as you may reveal something intriguing and creative.
Personally, I enjoy creating moodboards as they give me a clearer sense of how style trends, materials,
furniture and home décor can work cohesively in an interior setting.
This method has the ability to capture the mood and aesthetic that I will then present to my clients.

Camera

Be prepared – take photos & have images in your phone of the rooms as they are, along with images of what you’re wanting to purchase.
Be flexible in your approach and consider similar items to what you originally wanted if you find something that suits your
budget better or is available there and then if you don’t want to wait for an order and delivery.

You may want to do this all yourself or you may want to engage an Interior Designer (I know one!)
to put concepts together for you and then source everything from suppliers that work exclusively with Interior Designers.
By purchasing this way your home will be furnished with items that you won’t see everywhere, adding a unique and cohesive look to your home.

2018 – The year of the renovation

Renovations

2018 is shaping up to be the year of the renovation for The Style Project.

Two clients that have confirmed kitchen renovations and we’re currently waiting on Body Corporate approval for a 2 level apartment full renovation.  So as I’m charting time lines for these projects I was reminded about a fabulous video I’d seen that NAB produced on Renovations.

To view click on the NAB logo below and I hope this inspires you to think about an upcoming renovation or that it helps with a current renovation you’re working on.

Social Media also offers amazing inspiration when renovating.

5 Quick Home Decorating Updates

#1 – Table Lamps

To kick off our 5 Quick Home Decorating Updates let’s begin with table lamps

Table lamps offer a more subtle form of lighting to any room.  I have one in my kitchen as I love the feeling of walking into a softly lit room after dinner & when the dishes are done.

Be sure to buy a lamp that has enough height to it.  So often clients tell me that they added a lamp to a room and it didn’t have any impact & then when I see the room and why there wasn’t an impact it’s because the lamp is too short.  I love large lamps and as a general rule they shouldn’t be under 60cm.  The taller the lamp the larger the lampshade so the size you purchase will be dictated by the space you have to put the lamp on.

Table lamp from Bloomingdales and available through https://www.thestyleproject.com.au

By adding a large table lamp you have a “hero” piece in the space.
A “hero” piece is a stand out item that works perfectly with the other pieces in the room.

Classic shapes with classic shades will stand the test of time and bring a warm glow to any room

Bloomingdales

Bloomingdales work with Interior Designers, Decorators and Architects and can customise shades to suit any project.
Every time I take a client to Bloomingdales they love the endless possibilities as we try out
different shade options to work best with our concept.  My personal favourite is adding a gold matt lining to a shade.
Click here to see Bloomingdales products, all of which can be purchased through The Style Project.

#2 –  Cushions

Cushions add the finishing touch to a sofa or bed and can be changed to suit your decor for the warmer or cooler months.

A cream sofa with three different sized cushions in grey/pale blue/deep grey/blue hues – perfect for a beach inspired room.

#4 – Indoor gardens

Custom cushion upholstery from Warwick Fabrics and available through https://www.thestyleproject.com.au

By adding a large plant to the corner of a room you add both colour & privacy.
When you’ve spent all of your money and still have a space to fill – plants like this Travelers Palm are the perfection option.

A living plant is a beautiful thing to add to a console, much like this stunning Calathea Zebrina

This cane planter houses a bright green indoor plant – perfect for a sunny space

A concrete planter display of fiddle leaf fig, elephant bush and succulents catch the sunlight and make a statement in a corner

#5 – Paint the unexpected

A paint brush, an old shirt, some colour & you’re ready to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary!

A dark room has a pop of colour added with this vivid green wall painted behind shelving

White cabinets have the illusion of added depth with this dark grey paint

Dark timber panelling offsets lighter timber shelves

A contrast to these timber shelves & desk top with a painted tongue and groove wall

A mint background lightens up a black cabinet.
Any colour you would like to bring into your room can be added to the back of a cabinet.
You can tie in your cushions, or a colour in a rug.
It works best if a variation on one of the colours and not an exact replica.

From pretty pastels to bold statement rooms, allow us to inspire you with a selection of stunning images.

Each image is a composition of layers.  The more you look the more you will see.

This is how I spend my spare time – just looking & observing how a room is put together and what makes it work.

At the end of this blog I’ve added some links you may find helpful for your own Inspirational Images.

Velvet is without a doubt my favourite fabric.  It’s luxurious to look at & smooth to the touch.
This image shows that by mixing different textures as shown in the cushions, you create a more relaxed look to the formality of the velvet sofa.

A statement wall mural adding a more playful feel to the room with the monkey behind the palm frond and then a formal antique gilded sofa in the foreground.
A modern twist has been added to the sofa with the lighter coloured piped seat & two sized cushions in a tone of the sofa fabric.

Black and white – such a classic look.
A mixture of traditional & modern elements have been added to this room.
The button detailed sofa in a mid century shape, a purple sofa & then black and white accessories, many of them older pieces and then a modern white lamp added.
This is a multi layered room that works well due to its thoughtful limitation of only 3 colours – black, white & purple.

The simplicity of this room is what makes it work.
A non working fireplace stacked with perfectly sized wood in a tone that mirrors the button detailed leather ottomans in the foreground.
All artwork doesn’t need to be hung as is shown on the mantle here with these sketches propped against the wall.
The round mirror works well with all of the square and rectangular shapes in the room, while the flowers & plant add an overall softness.

An oversized mirror anchors this traditionally decorated room and then the twist comes in the floorboards and
skin rug (faux is always best) giving it a modern look.

Simplicity with an unadorned parquet floor, oversized window & stunning plasterwork makes this space a stand out.

Double height windows, a sunny room, gorgeous outlook & enough books to last many hours of reading.
Now this is a library you would want to spend hours and hours in.

Another simple room on first appearance but look further and that black vaulted ceiling is far from simple.
A white subway tiled floor is an unusual choice for a floor, yet works well with the Scandinavian inspired dining table and chairs.

Bringing the outdoors in with the seamless transition of these metal and glass doors & windows.
Oh to have the space for a structure as stunning as this!

Pretty in pink.
Classic shapes and architecture come alive with a silver leather sofa in a traditional Chesterfield and then a modern take on a classic chandelier.
This room is pretty & welcoming with it’s layering of pastel and assorted size cushions and mirror mimicking the plasterwork on the wall.

The Style Project BlogWhite & grey.
Simple, elegant and timeless.
The layering in this room is subtle in the different pattern of the chairs at either end of the dining table
& the wallpaper behind the console is again white and grey, yet ever so subtle.

The Style Project BlogA classic fireplace with a marble surround and no hearth gives this room a contemporary look.
With gas fires there’s no need for a hearth and more floor space is allocated without one.
Sconces either side of the above mantle mirror will add a warm glow to this room of an evening.
Black, white & soft pinks add to this classic room.

While not everyone will love the darkness of this space, look at what just one colour in one piece of furniture can do to a room.
Layers of black and then a pop of mustard velvet – I love it!
