The Blues

The Blues

The blues can be both good and bad.
There’s blue when decorating which is all good, and then there are
The Winter blues, which for those of us in the southern hemisphere we are experiencing right now – not so good.
For those in the northern hemisphere it’s the blue of a swimming pool – bliss!

There are so many blues to choose from when decorating and if commitment to blue
is an issue for you, then why not start with a few accessories.
It’s a simple transition and there are so many blues to choose from.

If the winter blues have you down you might enjoy our delicious recipe this week,
guaranteed to chase those winter blues away.

We also have some stunning pools that you’re either enjoying now or can
look forward to in the coming months.

A comfort food recipe sure to please

I love comfort food as much as the next person, but I’m always looking for healthy versions of my favourite foods.

So I was thrilled when I found this lighter version of Macaroni & Cheese at Eatingwell.com
The same taste but nowhere near the calories.

Macaroni & Cheese

Ingredients

3 tablespoons plain dry breadcrumbs,  (see Tip)

1 teaspoon extra-virgin olive oil

1/4 teaspoon paprika

1 16-ounce or 10-ounce package frozen spinach, thawed

1 3/4 cups low-fat milk, divided

3 tablespoons all-purpose flour

2 cups shredded extra-sharp Cheddar cheese

1 cup low-fat cottage cheese

1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1/4 teaspoon salt

Freshly ground pepper, to taste

8 ounces (2 cups) whole-wheat elbow macaroni, or penne

Preparation

Put a large pot of water on to boil. Preheat oven to 450°F. Coat an 8-inch-square (2-quart) baking dish with cooking spray.

Mix breadcrumbs, oil and paprika in a small bowl.
Place spinach in a fine-mesh strainer and press out excess moisture.

Heat 1 1/2 cups milk in a large heavy saucepan over medium-high heat until steaming.
Whisk remaining 1/4 cup milk and flour in a small bowl until smooth; add to the hot milk and cook,
whisking constantly, until the sauce simmers and thickens, 2 to 3 minutes.
Remove from heat and stir in Cheddar until melted.
Stir in cottage cheese, nutmeg, salt and pepper.

Cook pasta for 4 minutes, or until not quite tender. (It will continue to cook during baking.)
Drain and add to the cheese sauce; mix well.
Spread half the pasta mixture in the prepared baking dish. Spoon the spinach on top.
Top with the remaining pasta; sprinkle with the breadcrumb mixture.

Bake the casserole until bubbly and golden, 25 to 30 minutes.
Serves four.

The Block Rooftop Reveal

The Block Rooftop Reveal

618179-the-block

Having just finished watching The Block I’m not too sure if the contestants will have these smiles on their faces.

This wasn’t the last show before auction as was anticipated, there’s one more apartment to renovate.
Not sure how nobody noticed an apartment on the ground floor – but it makes for good television!

$20,000 prize money for the winners of the next two weeks and a whole lot more renovating to go.

The rooftop and overall look of the building is fabulous and it will be interesting to see how much the aprtments sell for.
In the meantime here are some images to get us all by until next week’s reveal.

Bedrooms

Bedrooms

One of the most important rooms in our homes is the bedroom.

We spend 1/3 of our lives in bed, so why not do it Style.

How is your bedroom decorated?
Is it classic, modern, eclectic, perfectly styled or are you desperate for decorating ideas?

All the rooms in your home can benefit from swapping furniture around.
Why not swap lampshades, cushions or rugs from room to room.
It’s costs nothing yet gives you the feeling of having been shopping – a win win.

So now that you’ve moved things around, you look back and see that just a few
new pieces will take your room to the next level.  It may be the addition of a mirror, bedhead,
some artwork, new bedside tables or wallpaper.
Sometimes it’s one piece that makes all the difference to the look and feel of a room.

My favourite addition to any bedroom is a bedhead.
They are the focal point of the room and balance out the proportion of the bed,
which is a large flat surface taking up most of the space in the room.

These beautiful bedroom images could be just the encouragement you need to rush out and get busy
with a new project.  Don’t forget to send me any images!

Real homes & how people live – Sonya & Adam

Real homes & how people live
Sonya & Adam

This is our first Real Homes blog and I’m thrilled with
the response I had to last week’s blog asking for readers
to share their stories with me.

Sonya & Adam, their gorgeous 2 year old daughter Willow &
as seen in the photograph below, their apricot standard poodle Harvey,
live in Adelaide in a home lovingly renovated & decorated by the owners.

Formal Lounge Dubrich (2)

This formal living room in Sonya & Adam’s home was inspired by
Australian Photographer, Peter Lik’s Artwork of Central Park &
the room has been designed around this image.

They purchased the complete artwork on a holiday in Hawaii
where they were recommended to have track lighting installed.
The track lighting when dimmed mirrors the lighting in the artwork.

The sofa is from King Furniture
Coffee Tables from White Home
Rug from Bayliss Rugs
Lamp from Freedom Furniture
Cushions from Etsy
Wall paint is Dulux Domino
The armchairs are over 30 years old and were Sonya’s
mothers which she had reupholstered.
These Parker chairs still bear the teeth marks from
Sonya’s 2 year old sister at the time, now almost 50 years on!

There’s something wonderful about a room when you bring some of your
own history in and in this case it’s the arm chairs.

Sonya and Adam’s colour choice of Dulux Domino, is one shade shy of black
and while many may be intimidated by such a dark colour,
they were able to see the benefit of wrapping their room
in a strong colour and as you can see, their choice paid off.

The room has a very modern feel to it, yet it’s welcoming and
has a real warmth to it.

Flowers feature regularly in the room, especially when visitors are due.

After researching this blog I went over to facebook
and have liked Peter Lik’s page.
His work is exceptional and well worth a look.

Thank you so much to Sonya, Adam, Willow and our stunning model Harvey.
I hope that Sonya & Adam have inspired you to have your home featured on
The Style Project’s blog and I look forward to hearing from you.

I hope you have a fabulous week

The Block Room Reveal – Living & Dining Rooms

The Block Room Reveal
Living & Dining Rooms

A twist this week!

I’m starting this blog on Sunday night, having just watched the show.

Tomorrow night the contestants will, for the first time, judge each others rooms.

My prediction for this week’s winners are Kim & Matt.
It would be their first win and I think well deserved this week.

I’ll be back tomorrow night with the winners.

The Block Sky High

I wasn’t sure I would get to post this blog tonight.
The power went out and came back on just in time for
me to see tonight’s episode  – thankfully!

It has been raining in Sydney for 3 days now and I suppose having no
power for only a short amount of time isn’t as bad as others are having
with black outs all over the city.

My laptop’s fully charged and a freshly warmed up heat bag sits on my lap
just in case I find myself plunged into darkness again.

Now back to The Block ………..
The scores have been tallied and the winners are

1st – Kim & Matt
2nd – Trixie & Johnno
3rd – Alisa & Lysandra
4th – Bec & George
5th – Madi & Jarrod

Kim & Matt

Living room kim and matt

The flooring is stunning and everything is so well executed.
It’s open, spacious, the walls (again) are beautiful
and the choice of artwork is brilliant!
While not shown here the timber wall is a true stand out and while this
won’t appeal to everyone, it will be popular when it comes time to selling.

Trixie & Johnno

Living room trixie and johnno

What I liked most about this room was how bright, light & spacious it was.
The shelving and how it wraps around is beautiful & the technology incorporated
into the room suits the penthouse location to perfection.
Some may say not having a designated dining space was a mistake
but if they utilise the balcony space to incorporate a dining table
then they have both a large living space and a dining space.
I would though, have liked for the space used as a reading corner,
which I found out of place, to have been used more wisely.

 Alisa & Lysandra

Living room alisa and lysandra

I like the Danish inspiration of these rooms and the simple styling.
Their lighting choices are spot and the recessed television
and shelving show the amount of time dedicated to the planning of their rooms.
The hot pink Dog artwork finished the room off beautifully.

Bec & George

Living room bec and george
I love the timber floors and chairs, the white walls and overall feel of this room.
The styling is beautifully appointed and the coloured wall (not shown)
added warmth to this space.
The projector I felt wasn’t necessary and a large television would have been sufficient.

Madi & Jarrod

Living room madi and jarrod

Madi and Jarrod really have matured in their overall design.
This is a well thought through room with a sophisticated styling not previously seen by them.
The table and chairs are perfectly paired and it’s unfortunate that Madi doubted
her Mint wall (not shown here) that she painted over, as the judges liked the colour.
My absolute favourite here are the chairs – they’re fabulous.

Next week will be the foyer, laundry
& guest powder room
Can’t wait!
I hope you have a fabulous week

Real homes & how people live

Real homes & how people live

I have a terrible habit of peeking into people’s homes as I walk by and am thrilled
whenever I catch a glimpse.

welcome-doormat

I would happily pay a small fee to be able to walk through homes that take my fancy
& it could be a way to reward the homeowner for such an attractive looking property.
OK – so that idea probably won’t take off, but imagine being able to see
how real people live.

Not a magazine showing a room with a throw place just so;
a child skipping happily through a room or a vase of flowers
with it’s buds perfectly opened.

I’m talking about homes that people live in.  Homes that show the family’s
true personality; where they have traveled, what stages they are at in their lives.
Has their much loved dog or cat chewed or clawed mercilessly at what was once
the perfect sofa and has now become a chewy thing or scratching post for the
family’s four legged friend.

Floor Fashion

Floor Fashion

Let’s talk fashion – Floor fashion

The treatment of a floor, not with rugs or carpeting,
but the actual floor itself,  shows just how stunning
a floor can be.

I spend hours roaming the web, searching for updates, trends, images and
looking at what’s happening in the design world in general.

Floors play an integral role in how you style and decorate a room.
Starting at the bottom and working your
way up is the perfect foundation to any room.

Here are some visually beautiful floors, without the addition
of anything but a floor or paint treatment.

For rugs to adorn your floors I came across a fabulous website
Fashion for Floors from Monte Carlo.

When I lived in Nice, in the south of France
I would go to Monte Carlo on a Saturday night
or sightseeing during the day.

It’s a stunning part of the world and
Floor Fashion’s website is equally stunning.

After selecting the English or French version
you will be rewarded with a visually beautiful website
with music & Pret A Porter rugs.

The overall feel of the website shows you just how
important an element floors are when decorating.
I have added their link HERE  (don’t skip this!)

Client Request – Pink with Shimmer

Client Request – Pink with Shimmer

A client asked for four investment pieces to create a feeling she was after for a room in her home.

Her brief to me was Pink with Shimmer

When she saw the items I had selected her words, were Stylish, Elegant & Livable!

The Greek Key ottomans are for additional seating, the French inspired sofa has a luxuriously soft filling, perfect for my client’s weekend mid afternoon naps.  The pendant is not only a stunning piece of architecture but the light thrown is perfect for the space, and the additional storage in the sideboard hides away a lot of everyday items she didn’t want out on permanent display.

Ceiling Sensations

Ceiling Sensations

Look up and what do you see?
If it’s white, flat and rather uninteresting, then read on for new possibilities …………

Ceilings are finally gaining the recognition they deserve, with more and more people thinking beyond walls when they decorate.

Painting ceilings the same or an opposing colour as the walls, wallpapering, adding timber panels or fabric, are just some of the ideas you can use when looking to decorating your ceiling.

One of my favourite ways to decorate is with metal ceilings. With my passion for older style homes, metal ceilings are the perfect way to add character and charm to any home.
Having said this, more and more modern homes are adding metal ceilings and splashbacks for interest and texture.

Suppliers for some of these ideas are listed below

Nina Campbell Wallpaper & Porters Paints Wallpaper

Tin panels

Timber ceilings

DuluxPaint & Porters Paints

(None of the suppliers mentioned in this blog were paid for their recommendations)

What will you do with your fifth wall?

I would love to hear and see how you have thought beyond your walls when decorating and what you have done with your ceiling
