How to build a mood board

Let's get creative

Firstly I’m sending lots of love to our Melbourne readers who are in lock down at this time.  This blog is for you.

With everyone spending more time at home there’s only so much tv you can watch, so why not create a mood board of how you would like your home to look.

Start with one room and have some fun.

Let’s get started!

Your building blocks will be:

  1. For online mood boards Canva offers a wide range of free templates and this will be your starting point. Alternatively you can use Powerpoint or if you own a Mac then Keynote.

  2. For hard copy mood boards (actual paper items or items collected and placed together) you can start with large poster sized cardboard and I also like to use trays for tiles, taps etc.

  3. Now what to put into those templates – Pinterest is an excellent source when looking for inspiration. Simply type in what it is you’re looking for eg: armchair, navy velvet sofa, timber coffee table etc.
Save the images to your desktop and then add them to your mood board. This is your dream room so add everything you love, even if it’s not within your price range (budgeting comes later) – Instagram is constantly filled with new products & ideas and if there are businesses whose items you like you can subscribe to their newsletters to be kept up to date with new stock and sale items.

  4. I like to start with a “hero piece” when I’m designing for a client.
This might be a lamp, buffet or piece of artwork. Something that is a WOW piece and draws you into the room – I like 2 pieces for a larger room and one for a smaller. You don’t want too many pieces like this or the eye doesn’t know where to land and things can get lost in a room with too many WOW items. The other items in the room should compliment this item and draw inspiration from it.

The requirements for the room below were for a leather arm chair and I worked from there.
The “found bone” inlay cabinet is a hero piece, along with the alabaster table lamp. The floor lamp with it’s circle insert works with the table lamp, while the cushion colours tie in with the leather armchair & the textures on the cushions add warmth to the beige sofa they will be sitting on. The rug has a subtle pattern and the colours again tie in with the chair & cushions.

When it comes to what I’m going to add to a room I like to lay each room out in a tray & add fabrics, images & any samples that I have. This was you can put it aside and as you find more pieces for each room you add to it to build up the story you’re creating. With trays they’re also stackable so it takes up less space when doing this over a period of time.

Budgeting your project

Now that you have everything together it’s time to get working on your budget. A simple spreadsheet is a good place to add each item, supplier and price. You can revisit this document each time you see something similar and compare the items. Anything that goes on sale can be added here & this can assist with the decision on which items to purchase.

I hope you have fun putting your mood board together, either digital or physically putting items together until you have an idea of how you would like your room to look.

A simple way to add drama to a room

Who doesn’t love a bit of drama?
Inside your home that is! I’m talking about your walls.
There are so many shades of white to choose from but let’s think beyond white and how by picking up a paint brush you can dramatically change both the look and feel of any room.

Dimension is added to this space with the white wall in the background and the dark textured wall in the foreground, with the blossom being a link between the two.

This matt dark grey dining room wall is the perfect accent for the black and white upholstered chairs and bench seating.

Olive green kitchens are increasingly popular & by painting the walls you have the impact without the added expense of new cabinetry.

Navy and pink walls work in with the furnishing of this space at the bottom of a staircase

Navy & coral accents make for a stunning pairing

Offset dark walls & shelving with a white marble mantle
Everything else is dark but lighting lifts the mood and the mirror over the mantle helps to reflect more light

By adding a mural to this room the doors and ceiling aren’t the only drama in this sitting room

This green wall and sofa are a modern statement, especially as the skirting is painted the same colour as the wall.

Drama has been added to this room by running the wall colour up and through the centre of the room on the ceiling & floor.

A flat grey wall, including the skirting boards, anchors this room
It’s traditional mantle works perfectly with the modern mustard armchair

With its dark wall this traditionally decorated bedroom now has a modern look & feel to it

Spring Styling

The weather’s warming up so what better time to update a room or two in your home. Light, fresh and bright or dark, moody & inviting. We’ve put together some inspirational mood boards for you to look at and hopefully get some inspiration from. All items are available through our suppliers and can be purchased from The Style Project at our preferential pricing. If there’s anything that you like drop us an email or text – all details are on our contact page here. We’d be only too happy to give you a price, check availability and advise on delivery costs to wherever you live in Australia.

Greg & Blush are a perfect combination. Cool & warm brought together in this room with rattan in both the lamp bases and armchair. Every room needs a place to throw off your jacket or sit down while you put on your shoes and this classic rattan armchair will be at home in any room.
We’ve added our favourite Dulux greys and shown them with a crisp white.

Dark and sophisticated – this space with its dark green feature wall and oversized chandelier offer comfort, warmth and and invitation to sit and relax.
______________________________________________________________________________

These seven drawer dressers are available in either black, coral or sand – adding a point of interest to a bedroom, hallway or dining room.
______________________________________________________________________________

Would you ever want to get out of bed again? I love the versatility of many of the pieces in this room. The chair, table lamp, cushions and mirror can all be used in either bedrooms or living room spaces. I have the exact same table lamp on a hall table in my home.

When adding table lamps to a bedside my rule of thumb is nothing under 65 cm tall. With the vast expanse of the bed you need to balance out the tables and lamps on either side of the bed and a tall lamp up to 74cm will balance the room perfectly while offering ample light in the room.
______________________________________________________________________________

Green with envy! The 3 C’s – cosy, classic & filled with charisma. The background is a deep green wallpaper and will transform a dining space enveloping it with warmth and character (another C!).
______________________________________________________________________________

Black and white. It doesn’t get more classic than that. Add tassles & textures and you have a transformational additional to a classic cream sofa or all white bedding.
______________________________________________________________________________

This Malibu collection of blue and white accent pieces set against sand coloured classics offers the perfect coastal collection. The blue/grey wall adds a depth of colour to the room bringing it all together.

Our selections for a blue/grey wall are these Dulux options

Melbourne

My home city

I’ve been in Melbourne for Decoration + Design for the past 4 days and not sure how many of you know that for the first 37 years of my life Melbourne was my home.

It’s a strange feeling now as the city has changed so much & I feel like a tourist,
but I also love that, as it’s like a mini holiday each time I’m there.

View from Crowne Plaza Melbourne

The view from my bed on Sunday morning while I was surfing the net and reading the papers.
I LOVE hotels so much I truly could live in one – it’s just the best feeling.
Possibly because someone else makes the bed!

Kim & Anna

It’s been so lovely to spend time with my mother & also catching up with one of my dearest friends.
It’s like we saw each other yesterday!
Just how much can two women talk without coming up for air?

Anna’s the owner of Fendi Hairdressing in Brighton & they do fabulous hair!

Screen Shot 2016-07-25 at 5.15.51 PM

Another trip down memory lane and this used to be an ANZ bank where my father did his banking.  It’s now a lovely French cafe who do the best lemon tarts ever – and I’m a true connoisseur of lemon tarts!

 Williamstown house

While driving around Williamstown I found my idea of the perfect Melbourne home.  It reminds me of the era or the house that my Nana used to own.
If I didn’t live in a hotel then this would be my second choice!

I’ll be posting lots of images to Instagram in the coming days as there were so many new & exciting products that I found.

Until next time

Decorating Update

Add some colour!

It’s been 12 months since I last wrote about decorating accessories.
I spent the day at a Sydney trade fair today and colour was everywhere!

Let’s start with these stunning lacquer boxes which I featured last year.
This year there are more colours and the Tiffany blue is flying off the shelves!

BB lampshade

This lampshade reminds me of Joseph and his technicolour coat

BB Pineapples

The perfect kitchen accessories

BB watermelon cushions

I love the vibrancy of these cushions

BB gold baskets

As a “Glaminator” (for those of you that took our recent decorating quiz will understand)
I adore anything metallic and these gold baskets are fabulous!

I have been looking for the perfect drinks dispenser for the past month and with summer just
around the corner either of these two would be perfect.  I have my niece and her boyfriend coming
over for lunch tomorrow and I’ll be serving Pimms, which would look stunning in one of these.
(the cupcake holder is just a cute addition).

BB table accessories

Here’s the Pimms recipe I’ll be using

pimms

8 thin slices Lebanese cucumber

1/2 orange, thinly sliced

1 lemon, halved lengthways, thinly sliced

4 strawberries, hulled, washed, quartered

4 small sprigs fresh mint

Ice cubes, to serve

125ml (1/2 cup) Pimm’s No. 1 Cup

500ml (2 cups) chilled lemonade

Place the cucumber, orange, lemon, strawberry and mint in a large jug
Add the ice, and pour over the Pimm’s and lemonade
Serve immediately

Paint Names

Paint Names

(if I were naming this one it would be Lime Lusciousness)

Have you walked through the hardware or paint store and wondered where the names for paints come from?

I recently asked Andrea Lucea-Orr, Dulux’s Colour Planning & Communications Manager, some questions about Paint Names.

Here’s what Andrea had to say.

Q  With people relying on a paint name when making a selection,
what is the process Dulux use when selecting paint names?

A  We always aim for the colour name to respond to the actual colour.
eg: If it’s a green it needs to reflect the colour…we wouldn’t call it sky green!

Q  Do you agree that emotions play a part when people select a paint name?

A  Definitely emotions play a huge role when selecting a paint colour name.
We have tested this in research over the years and we try and use positive names when selecting colour names.
You should never see names such as “trashy yellow” or ‘horrible grey’!

Q  What is the most unusual Dulux paint name you know of and do you know how that name was selected?

A  There are so many!!!  Dulux “Pinch Me” is a mid pink colour
…assuming the colour name was picked after the flesh is pinched it can become much pinker!
I’m hoping so anyway!!!
I love this one too….Dulux “Grape Expectations”
(I’m assuming from the old “Great Expectations”) this is  a lovely purple.

Q  With so many people cautious about painting, how do you suggest people go about select a paint colour?

A  The most important thing people should listen to is their own personal taste.
We shouldn’t be asking our friends or neighbours about their personal opinions,
as it should be your personal style that dictates.
If you like blue, use blue…often people feel they should stay safe,
however, if you decide to go neutral your home really won’t reflect your own personality.
The other important item to purchase is Sample Pots!
Nothing gives you a better indication of how a colour can look than when you see the actual colour
on your wall next to your furnishings and decor.

Q  Do you personally prefer bold or more subtle colours?
An example of your home or office preference would be good.

A  Oh….this is an interesting question!
I have over 35 colours internally in my home!
I have a combination of subtle room colours and quite bold colours,
some striped rooms and others in traditional colours.
The more the merrier!
I love to feel the difference when moving from one space within the home to another.
Especially between the bedrooms and work spaces.
The room should give you a particular feel when entering to either make you feel more
stimulated (study), tranquil (bedroom),etc.
As you would imagine, I don’t have many rooms painted in white!

Q  Can you tell me the best selling “white” and “colour” paints Dulux currently have?

dux-8801f

A  “Antique White U.S.A.”  is definitely the best selling white for Dulux as it is a beautiful white.

As far as one colour…hard to say, but I would like to say charcoal!

dulux6051
Colours like “Dulux Namadji” and “Domino” in the greys are very popular.

dulux6029
If you are asking for a true colour, reds are still popular ie. Dulux “Red Box”
and in the neutrals Dulux “Self-Destruct” is really popular!

There are so many I could just keep going!

Many thanks to Andrea for taking the time to speak with me
