5 Quick Home Decorating Updates

#1 – Table Lamps

To kick off our 5 Quick Home Decorating Updates let’s begin with table lamps

Table lamps offer a more subtle form of lighting to any room.  I have one in my kitchen as I love the feeling of walking into a softly lit room after dinner & when the dishes are done.

Be sure to buy a lamp that has enough height to it.  So often clients tell me that they added a lamp to a room and it didn’t have any impact & then when I see the room and why there wasn’t an impact it’s because the lamp is too short.  I love large lamps and as a general rule they shouldn’t be under 60cm.  The taller the lamp the larger the lampshade so the size you purchase will be dictated by the space you have to put the lamp on.

By adding a large table lamp you have a “hero” piece in the space.
A “hero” piece is a stand out item that works perfectly with the other pieces in the room.

Classic shapes with classic shades will stand the test of time and bring a warm glow to any room

Bloomingdales

Bloomingdales work with Interior Designers, Decorators and Architects and can customise shades to suit any project.
Every time I take a client to Bloomingdales they love the endless possibilities as we try out
different shade options to work best with our concept.  My personal favourite is adding a gold matt lining to a shade.

#2 –  Cushions

Cushions add the finishing touch to a sofa or bed and can be changed to suit your decor for the warmer or cooler months.

#4 – Indoor gardens

By adding a large plant to the corner of a room you add both colour & privacy.
When you’ve spent all of your money and still have a space to fill – plants like this Travelers Palm are the perfection option.

A living plant is a beautiful thing to add to a console, much like this stunning Calathea Zebrina

This cane planter houses a bright green indoor plant – perfect for a sunny space

A concrete planter display of fiddle leaf fig, elephant bush and succulents catch the sunlight and make a statement in a corner

#5 – Paint the unexpected

A paint brush, an old shirt, some colour & you’re ready to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary!

A dark room has a pop of colour added with this vivid green wall painted behind shelving

White cabinets have the illusion of added depth with this dark grey paint

Dark timber panelling offsets lighter timber shelves

A contrast to these timber shelves & desk top with a painted tongue and groove wall

A mint background lightens up a black cabinet.
Any colour you would like to bring into your room can be added to the back of a cabinet.
You can tie in your cushions, or a colour in a rug.
It works best if a variation on one of the colours and not an exact replica.

Instagram Inspiration

Instagram

Instragram phone

My social media until recently consisted of blogging, facebook, pinterest and twitter, and of those blogging  and pinterest went hand in hand with all of the amazing images pinned.  I was initially reluctant to expand into Instagram, but now I love it.  The images are fabulous, the topics diverse and adding an image is so simple and you get your message out instantly – hence the name!

Recent posts have been of an item I found on the side of the road followed by its transformation, a meal from a bar I went to (it seems as if half the world now photographs their food before they eat and I thank Stephen for his patience) a photograph from Vivid and some client images.

You can view my Instagram page here

I’ve added some images from Instagrammers that I follow and will be sure to add to my current 133 posts in no time at all.

Five things & more ………..

I was recently watching a home renovation show and thought how incredibly sad it was for people to only work on their homes when they’re ready to sell.  Don’t be one of those people – do it now and enjoy living in the space you’ve always dreamed of

 five things

Let’s make this week the start of your winter decorating

1.

Start by creating a mood board
Either from magazines and pasted onto a board
or
from your ipad or computer & applying to an app
Click here to compare different apps

mood board

2.

Compare pricing on each product and add to an excel spreadsheet
By applying a simple formula you can add or subtract items to match your budget
Remember to allow a contingency for those forgotten items

budget calculator

3.

Before you start shopping don’t forget to measure – twice!
There’s nothing worse than a sofa arriving that doesn’t fit in the allocated space
Tape measure

4.

When’s the best time to buy?
June is filled with sales – so now is perfect!

Can you negotiate an even better price?
I always ask and I’m more often than not given a further discount

free delivery

Does that include delivery?
Just ask!

5.

 Sit back – relax and

enjoy your home

Don’t leave working on your home until you’re ready to sell
Do it now!

re-love project

While I wasn’t able to continue with the project in the last few weeks due to ill health,
my husband Stephen has stepped in and here he is applying the Stain & Varnish

This will be followed up with a coat of Clear Varnish

Feast Watson products

Thank you to the lovely Katia from Up The Wall Art who not only supplied this stunning
wallpaper for my project, but will also apply it for me.

Once the project is completed I will be posting a full blog on the process from start to finish.

100th Blog Post, Design Project Images & Favourite Photographs

100th post

On 29 July, 2012 I posted my first blog to my family & friends.
At that stage I didn’t have any subscribers.
Now my weekly blog is read by people from
the Netherlands, UK, Ireland, USA, Spain, France and of course Australia.

Initially I wondered how I would find something to write about each week.
Inspiration can come from a conversation, an image or a current project.

I now love that each week I know my blog is read by like minded people
interested in Interior Design.

This year is already off to a brilliant start with several new projects already under way.

Here are some images from recent projects along with photographs
from a photography course I took last year.

Heading North to Toowoomba

My family headed north on
New Years Eve

Following a restful few days at home for Christmas & with friends dropping by
and lots of bubbles consumed, we went to the airport headed north for Ballina/Byron.

We spent 3 days with my husband’s father and then travelled another
3 hours north to Toowoomba to stay with my brother & sister in law.

On the top of my list was to meet my new niece Katia, who is a gorgeous & happy baby.
Then once we had bonded it was off to the shops!

Rod & Ingrid Thurn (note the family name!) own a furniture & homewares store Vast Interior

Vast Interior Toowoomba 9fThat’s me with Ingrid in her store

This isn’t my first time to the store but it is the first time I got to play at being a shopkeeper.
While Ingrid interviewed a prospective employee, I fluffed cushions, rearranged
homewares and greeted customers.  I also made two sales while I was on the floor and had
such a great time – it took me back to my days working for
Barbara’s House & Garden when I lived in Melbourne.

Vast Interior Toowoomba 1

Apart from the sheer fun of selling a bookcase, candles and cushions, what
impressed me most about the business is their integrity.

Ingrid travels to hand select all of the products her store stocks and to ensure that  they
are both socially and economically sustainable.

Vast Interior’s motto is

The Difference is Everything

The difference between their products and other
commercial retailers is that they have been created by hand, eye & heart giving each piece
individuality & a point of difference

Vast Interior Toowoomba 2Ommmmm

  Vast Interior Toowoomba 9c

Having been one of their customers on several occasions I can assure anyone wanting something
sent (no matter where they live) that delivery can be arranged!

On a previous visit I fell madly in love with a  large French inspired cabinet along with two cross leg
side tables with rattan inlay (very Ralph Lauren at a fraction of the price) and they were delivered to
my front door in Sydney in mint condition

Vast Interior Toowoomba 7

We were talking about the origin of some of their pieces and Ingrid told me that one of the doors
they currently stock has the address plaque still attached.
This Indian script is the perfect starting point for Rodney’s upcoming trip to India & he
plans to investigate the origins of this piece.

While I am a tad biased being related to the owners, anyone passing their store
at 1/900 Ruthven Street, is guaranteed a warm welcome.

Vignette Visions

what is a vignette a brief evocative description, account, or episode

a small illustration or portrait photograph which fades
into its background without a definite border

Vignette’s are the perfect way of expressing yourself
A quick and simple way to make changes
&
The perfect addition to any tray

1. For maximum effect group items of similar shape, size & colour together in odd numbers,
preferably three or five

2. Stack books to elevate smaller items

3. Build around a light source such as a lamp, as the effect is lost in a dark corner

When looking for music each week I sometimes unexpectantly come across

Christmas is almost here

I’m tempted to decorate a little differently this year

Each year we put up a 6′ plus tree and each year I add a  new colour theme of decorations

This year I want to do something a little differently and found some new ways to decorate

Navy + Mint = Perfection

What a colour combination

Navy & Mint

 Navy & Mint colour swatches

A colour match made in heaven.

This weeks inspiration comes from the room I have designed for my step-daughter Mili
as a gift to her this Christmas.

The last time I decorated her bedroom she was 4 and while we have transitioned from an all pink
room, this will be a totally new look from bedding to paintwork.  In place of the exisiting decor
will be a room better suited to a teenager, with a sophisticated palette of navy and mint.

I’ll show you the finished product in the New Year.
