Decorating your home for the warmer months

Decorating your home for the warmer months

A simple way to welcome the warmer months into your home is by adding lighter colours.
This can be done with cushions, throws or a change of bedding.

My inspiration comes from the desire to add more of a freshness to a home, as opposed to the cooler months when I want to create a nesting feeling by adding darker tones and more texture – something you can snuggle into.

While the country is my escape, I love the colours of the beach, particularly those that have a more muted and faded look to them. Pastels, particularly in linen are such a light and fresh way of adding to a summer look.

Indoor plants not only provide a touch of green but they also improve air quality & keep air temperatures down by releasing moisture into the air.
They’re also much easier to grow in warmer weather with so many sunny days.
If you don’t have a green thumb – try a succulent as they practically look after themselves.

Summer holidays 2018/19

With Spring peaking its head around the corner and while some days are still crazy chilly, others are so warm it easily lulls you into believing we’ll all be back in Summer clothing before we know it.

Soft summer tones inspired by the simple luxury of the French way of life and their passion for creating homes made to be lived in, loved and shared is why this the “French Country Collections” Summer collection is one I look forward to with its easy blend of classic appeal and modern-day aesthetic.

Luxe Styling

Luxe Styling

I was told early on that I had a beer budget on
champagne taste – nothing seems to have changed too much!

Luxe Styling - The Style Project

I love luxury fabrics, rich velvets, textures and beautiful things.
I’m fortunate to work in an industry where I see these things on a regular basis and the
temptation to buy is enormous (would my husband please stop reading now).

I love to mix high and low end products in my own home and
it’s something I always encourage my clients to do.

Dressing your home is similar to dressing yourself.
You can get away with an inexpensive dress from one of the many chain stores
(H & M, Forever 21 & Zara come to mind)
if you’re wearing a killer pair of shoes.

Luxe Styling - The Style Project

Mixing and matching in your home is there perfect way to enable you to
update your home as you would your wardrobe.

Canvas + Sasson are one of my “go to” suppliers when looking to add a
Luxe Look to a clients home and their price points are well placed in the market.

Luxury, Elegance & Sumptuousness are abundant in these images.

New Year’s Resolutions 2016

Happy New Year
2016

HAPPY NEW YEAR

It’s the first day of the new year and everything’s possible!

I’m sitting at the kitchen table of our country house with the fan blowing on my back.
A very warm 36 degrees & it’s taken me hours of reading on the sofa to making it here to the table.

We rang in the new year with good food and wine and a quiet evening in our special part of the world.  I awoke to a warm morning and a day filled with possibility.  The reality of that possibility in this heat is that I’m moving ridiculously slowly but I have four resolutions to share with you.

1.  Wear more hats
HATS

I have a head for hats and am time poor many mornings so more hats make perfect sense.

2.  Install more wallpaper

THE STYLE PROJECT WALLPAPER

THE STYLE PROJECT WALLPAPER

Nothing transforms a room quite like wallpaper.
In a few hours you have made a statement to a room that nothing else achieves quite like wallpaper.
I work with the most amazing wallpaper installer and together we have worked some real magic and above are just three of the bedrooms we transformed this year.

3.  Never stop learning

NEVER STOP LEARNING

Last year I attended workshops on calligraphy, brush strokes & getting more from my Mac.
This year I would like to learn more advanced skills for blogging and venture more into Youtube videos.

4.  Dream Big

DREAM BIG

Last year The Style Project exceeded my expectations and this year I want to move to a whole other level.  Since I was a child I have wanted to sell furniture, it goes back to a furniture store near where we grew up and upstairs from the store was an apartment (I’d never seen an apartment before, everyone I knew lived in houses) and the wife of the man that ran the store was so stylish –  I wanted to be him and her combined!  While I purchase furniture for my clients on a weekly basis, I now want to do this on a much broader scale.  So many of the items available to designers aren’t sold in retail stores and I’m looking for a unique way to showcase some of the fabulous pieces I have available to The Style Project.

Heading North to Toowoomba

My family headed north on
New Years Eve

Following a restful few days at home for Christmas & with friends dropping by
and lots of bubbles consumed, we went to the airport headed north for Ballina/Byron.

We spent 3 days with my husband’s father and then travelled another
3 hours north to Toowoomba to stay with my brother & sister in law.

On the top of my list was to meet my new niece Katia, who is a gorgeous & happy baby.
Then once we had bonded it was off to the shops!

Rod & Ingrid Thurn (note the family name!) own a furniture & homewares store Vast Interior

Vast Interior Toowoomba 9fThat’s me with Ingrid in her store

This isn’t my first time to the store but it is the first time I got to play at being a shopkeeper.
While Ingrid interviewed a prospective employee, I fluffed cushions, rearranged
homewares and greeted customers.  I also made two sales while I was on the floor and had
such a great time – it took me back to my days working for
Barbara’s House & Garden when I lived in Melbourne.

Apart from the sheer fun of selling a bookcase, candles and cushions, what
impressed me most about the business is their integrity.

Ingrid travels to hand select all of the products her store stocks and to ensure that  they
are both socially and economically sustainable.

Vast Interior’s motto is

The Difference is Everything

The difference between their products and other
commercial retailers is that they have been created by hand, eye & heart giving each piece
individuality & a point of difference

Having been one of their customers on several occasions I can assure anyone wanting something
sent (no matter where they live) that delivery can be arranged!

On a previous visit I fell madly in love with a  large French inspired cabinet along with two cross leg
side tables with rattan inlay (very Ralph Lauren at a fraction of the price) and they were delivered to
my front door in Sydney in mint condition

We were talking about the origin of some of their pieces and Ingrid told me that one of the doors
they currently stock has the address plaque still attached.
This Indian script is the perfect starting point for Rodney’s upcoming trip to India & he
plans to investigate the origins of this piece.

While I am a tad biased being related to the owners, anyone passing their store
at 1/900 Ruthven Street, is guaranteed a warm welcome.

Mad Men Inspiration

Mad Men Inspiration

This week I am completely obsessed with Season 6 of Mad Men, and since I last wrote about Mad Men Decorating in October 2012, it’s time for an update.

When I first saw that the new season was coming to Foxtel I was thrilled, but then discovered it was on Showcase (a channel I don’t subscribe to) and wondered how long it would be before they moved it to another channel.  Problem averted (as I just couldn’t wait) and a quick download from iTunes and I’m up to date with all of Don Draper’s going’s on.  Each week that a new episode is aired in the U.S., a new episode is released to iTunes and I’m all over it!

Don’s life hasn’t changed that much, he divorced Betty as he was having affairs while married to her, and now he’s married to the gorgeous Megan and he’s at it again – really Don, what’s wrong with you?  Anyway, the characters are fabulous, the fashion questionable and the set designs gorgeous.  Can’t wait to see what next week’s instalment for the people at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce holds.

Client Request – Pink with Shimmer

Client Request – Pink with Shimmer

A client asked for four investment pieces to create a feeling she was after for a room in her home.

Her brief to me was Pink with Shimmer

When she saw the items I had selected her words, were Stylish, Elegant & Livable!

The Greek Key ottomans are for additional seating, the French inspired sofa has a luxuriously soft filling, perfect for my client’s weekend mid afternoon naps.  The pendant is not only a stunning piece of architecture but the light thrown is perfect for the space, and the additional storage in the sideboard hides away a lot of everyday items she didn’t want out on permanent display.
